Tucked in the very heart of our community at 1455 Pinion Street is one of Norwood’s most valuable resources – the Lone Cone Library. Established in 1939, the library has transformed from a one-room log cabin with a handful of books to the bustling center of knowledge and community engagement it is today. Offering a wide range of services and resources, the library now features modern facilities, digital collections, and various community programs for all ages.
On July 15, former superintendent of Norwood School District, Todd Bittner, took his new position as director at the Lone Cone Library. He brings 20 years of experience as an educator to the table as well as his administrative and keynote speaking abilities.
“The library is the heart of a community,” Todd stated. “It serves as a physical and digital gathering place, offering access to information, education, and entertainment for all ages. Libraries foster a sense of belonging and connection by providing essential resources, hosting community events, and offering digital services. They empower individuals to learn, grow, and participate actively in their community. The library is more than just a building; it’s a dynamic hub that reflects and serves the needs of its patrons, strengthening the community fabric as a whole.”
The eight staff members under Todd’s leadership are equally passionate and dedicated to serving the community, working together to offer a variety of services and amenities to meet the needs of the community. Patrons can utilize the computer lab, enjoy free Wi-Fi from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm daily, and visit the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center. Additional services include printing, copying, faxing, scanning, a public telephone, and a device charging station. The library also provides quiet study rooms and a cozy fireplace seating area, along with programs designed for all ages.
With a library card, members gain access to an extensive collection that caters to all ages and interests. This includes books, eBooks, audiobooks, DVDs, and BluRay discs, as well as free streaming on Kanopy. The library’s unique “Library of Things” allows patrons to borrow items such as telescopes, microscopes, disc golf sets, skis, and pickleball sets. Vision and mobility aid items are also available for those in need.
Some of the standout programs include Story Time for Littles, STEAM After School for elementary-aged kids, and Adult Craft Night. Wellness programs such as yoga with Maia Gaia and gymnastics with Tia Hoffman are also popular.
“The library offers its staff a chance to shine,” stated Library Assistant Hollie Marble. “We each have our own little talents that our supervisors encourage us to use to help the community.”
Hollie realized her love for marketing when she designed the latest brochure for the library. “I decided to start teaching classes on designing things online such as flyers, brochures, and business cards. The lessons have been a huge hit so far.”
Other staff members actively contribute to programs as well, such as Evan Allen who heads up Dungeons and Dragons sessions for teens and adults.
Some lesser-known services are available as well, like booking a librarian, notary services, and room rentals. As part of its ongoing community outreach, the library provides free lunches for kids every Friday, available to all youth ages 0-18.
Through its innovative programs, educational outreach, and commitment to fostering connections, the Lone Cone Library continues to be a cornerstone of knowledge and a cherished community asset. When it comes to future plans, Todd expressed, “We will focus on being good stewards of taxpayer money by prioritizing community needs, optimizing resource allocation, and fostering transparency.”
