2022 is the year, the year in which Norwood crawls out of hibernation and springs back to life! If there is one thing we can all agree on, it’s that we are all ready to get back to doing all the things we love. For residents of Wright’s Mesa, that means getting back to socializing and attending a variety of events. Now that we are allowed to gather again, there will be many fun, new and exciting events coming to Norwood!
Events return to The Livery
Norwood just happens to have a cute, quaint little venue in which the locals cherish and have come to and rely on for fun and entertainment, including music and theater events and performances. This year, The Livery is kicking off Norwood’s summer event season in a big way!
The return of dinner theater!
For the first time since before the pandemic began, dinner theater is returning to Norwood. Wide Sky Arts Collective and Norwood Park and Recreation District present, “Man Woman Flower,” May 12-14, 2022 at The Livery.
What is dinner theater exactly? Well, think about it as simply, “dinner and a show.” Dinner theater is a form of entertainment that combines a restaurant meal with a staged play or musical. Who doesn’t love going out to dinner? And who doesn’t love a good show? Put the two together and you’ve got yourself a super fun night out! Here’s a little fun fact, the concept of dinner theater dates all the way back to the Middle Ages.
The Play
“Man Woman Flower” by By Dan LaRocque.” A parade of characters whirls through a museum gallery, in a rapid-fire series of hilarious scenelets. A single painting transfixes each of the viewers, who react from their own unique perspectives. In doing so, they become humorous sketches themselves, exploring the nature of art and how it enriches life from a variety of angles.”
The Art
“Man Woman Flower” will begin with an artists’ reception and opening on Thursday, May 12 and will feature artists’ interpretations of the play. Doors open at 7 p.m., show begins at 8 p.m. Cost for the reception is $12 per person. The reception will feature hors d’oeuvres as well as a cash bar. Artwork will continue to be displayed throughout the entire event.
The Dinner
The dinner theater portion of “Man Woman Flower” will take place Friday and Saturday nights, May 13 and 14. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for socialization and cocktails. At 7:00 p.m., a buffet-style spaghetti dinner will be served. The play will commence at 8:00 p.m. following dinner. The cost for each night of dinner theater will be $25 per individual, $15 for two people, $15 per student (18 & under). Dinner will feature food grown and made locally right here in Norwood.
The dinner menu each night will feature:
- Spaghetti with fresh pomodoro sauce made with organic tomatoes by Mesa Rose Grocers.
- Handcrafted meatballs from Laidback Ranch (made by Kate at Mesa Rose Grocers).
- Locally sourced organic greens salad or kale caesar salad.
- Bread from Blue Grouse bakery.
- And a sweet treat from Thorneycroft Kitchen.
Questions and answers about the play with Liza Tanguay
Haven’t heard of that one. So what’s it about?
It’s a series of conversations about a painting.
That’s it?
Well, it is a short play. And the painting isn’t there.
We watch people talking about a painting no one can see?
Yeah, well, the thing is, we’ll all see it in our mind’s eye, through the characters’ responses to it.
Sounds a little abstract.
It’s actually pretty funny. And what people see in “Man Woman Flower” kind of depends on what they see in themselves. There’s a couple who could really use a new spark in their relationship, and a couple that is a little stuck in the infatuation phase. Then there’s a pair who are really stretching their art-appreciation legs at the museum, and another pair who are seeing exciting interior decorating ideas. And others, but you’ll have to see the whole thing.
This dinner theater event is a great way for the people who are participating in the theater workshop hosted by Wide Sky Arts Collective, to dip their toes into acting and stage work, and gain more experience. “Man Woman Flower” is a simple play, short and to the point, with a variety of characters, a simple set and basic costumes. Dinner theater is fun for not only those who are just starting out in theater, but for veterans of the theater as well. The funnest part of it all is working with the team it takes to bring the play to life, especially after everyone has had to spend so much time apart the past two years.
Tickets are available online by clicking here, or cash at the door the night of the event (though the event may sell out). Visit Norwood Park and Recreation District/Wide Sky Arts Collective for more information!
