It’s not just about fires—it’s about community.
The Norwood Fire Protection District (NFPD) has been a vital part of our community since its establishment in 1932. Initially a volunteer department serving an 18-square-mile area, it expanded in 1953 to cover both Norwood and Redvale, reaching 70 square miles. Today, the NFPD’s dedicated team protects over 800 square miles, ensuring the safety of thousands of residents, workers, and visitors across San Miguel and Montrose Counties.
The district operates with four full-time professionals, part-time contractors, and nearly 20 volunteers, responding to approximately 400 calls each year. Their commitment encompasses a wide range of services, including fire suppression, emergency medical care, hazardous materials response, search and rescue, and motor vehicle extrication. This team is the backbone of safety in the region, embodying a steadfast dedication to protecting lives and property.
Equipped with modern resources, the NFPD is prepared for diverse challenges. Its fleet includes two initial fire attack engines, two brush/wildland engines, a 2,000-gallon tactical tender, and a Forest Service engine. The department also has the capacity to offload 16,000 gallons of water and utilizes portable drop tanks for extended operations. Within Norwood, fire hydrants provide additional support for local fire suppression efforts. Beyond equipment, the district prioritizes prevention, offering year-round classes such as CPR, advanced first aid, and fire extinguisher training. Programs like “Learn Not to Burn” engage the community and schools, fostering awareness and preparedness.
Emergency medical services are another cornerstone of the NFPD’s work. The district employs a full-time paramedic and 17 certified EMTs who staff two advanced life support ambulances and a quick response vehicle. A backup ambulance in Redvale and a helicopter landing zone at the Uncompahgre Medical Center ensure swift action in critical situations. These capabilities make the NFPD a trusted lifeline in moments of urgency.
The NFPD’s role extends beyond emergencies. Partnerships with organizations such as the West Region Wildfire Council and neighboring fire districts strengthen its capacity to address regional challenges. Mutual Aid Agreements with Telluride and Nucla-Naturita Fire Protection Districts facilitate resource sharing and coordinated responses. The district also conducts fire mitigation activities, including defensible space assessments, forest thinning, and controlled burns, helping property owners reduce wildfire risks.
Volunteers are crucial to the NFPD’s success. The district actively welcomes individuals committed to community service, whether as long-term members or seasonal wildland contractors. This collaborative spirit ensures that the NFPD remains an effective force for safety and preparedness in the region.
Whether fighting a fire, saving a life, or tooting their horn and tossing candy out at a parade, the Norwood Fire Protection District is a cornerstone of the community.
