John Metzger has built an impressive career as one of the country’s most experienced public relations professionals. Starting out as a journalist, he went on to found one of the nation’s first technology public relations firms in 1991, Metzger Associates.
After years of success, John sold the firm in 2015 and moved to Norwood in 2018 where he is continuing his work as an independent consultant, specializing in business writing, media development, and communications strategy for a client list that stretches from the Front Range to overseas.
Although he has worked with thousands of companies over the years including venture capital groups and the Governor’s Office, it’s his ties to Norwood that have inspired him to blend his professional experience with a deep passion for smart growth and rural economic development. He sees similar economic opportunities in western Colorado with new business and lifestyle trends coming together in what he calls a Rural Renaissance. His passion is reflected in his regular column with the Telluride Daily Planet and Grand Junction Sentinel and in his involvement within the community.
John served as the Norwood Chamber of Commerce of Wright’s Mesa president from 2021 to 2022 when he stepped down due to a family medical situation.
“I was also a volunteer firefighter and Public Information Officer with the Norwood Fire Protection District for four years and resigned a year ago to devote more time to caring for my wife,” he explained.
As his family circumstances allow, John continues to be a contributor to the community, recently helping out with the Protect Wright’s Mesa anti-solar initiative and the NFPD’s critical mill levy campaign during the 2024 election.
John expressed his gratitude to the community for providing civilizational infrastructure like telecom, internet, delivery, groceries, gas, and fire/EMS services that allow him to work remotely in such a rural area. “I’ve lived on the Western Slope for about 10 years and never could have started and grown my business here 30 or 40 years ago,” he commented.
After a decade in Norwood, John said that he is seeing the community come together now more than ever. “The classic downtown business support that the chamber focuses on is really starting to pay off with the community being more committed to running sustainable retail with regular hours, reliable supply chains, and adjusting to Telluride’s integration of property, employees, housing, etc.,” he praised.
“As a chamber member, I just want to support others who could use some help and business advice,” John said. “I am happy to offer complimentary business and communications consultation services to any chamber members, local businesses, entrepreneurs, and others within the community who could benefit from it.”
As Norwood continues to grow and evolve, John will undoubtedly remain an influential figure in its development. He is a great example for those who wish to make a positive impact on their community while balancing professional success with personal commitments.
