Dennis Eymann, a North Dakota native, began taking pictures at the age of 12 with a 110 pocket instamatic that he purchased with money he earned from mowing lawns. Although the quality of the film and equipment wasn’t that great, he was hooked on trying to capture what he saw on film. In junior high, he was able to purchase his first 35mm and a zoom lens. He spent days hiking in the Des Lacs Wildlife Refuge next to his home town. It was there where he learned some important lessons about nature photography, including patience, waiting for the right moment, and animal behavior. In 1984, Eymann enrolled at Montana State University to study photography and cinematography. He later transferred to Columbia College in Hollywood, CA to complete his Bachelor of Arts degree. Finding it difficult to break into this business, and having school loans to pay off, Eymann ended up taking a job with a framing contractor. He had to put his childhood dream of being a photographer on hold. After moving up the ranks to a project superintendent, and building numerous custom homes, he realized that it was time to make his dream come true. Eymann now lives in the San Juan Mountains near Telluride, CO, and doesn’t leave home without his camera. Eymann says he is always fascinated by
observing nature and watching the constant changes before his eyes.
This is something that we shouldn’t take for granted and we should
all do our part to preserve the natural wonders that we have been
blessed with.
